South Elgin High School Car Crash: The city of South Elgin, Illinois is mourning the loss of two high school students who died in a devastating car accident on the morning of August 31, 2022. Two other students were seriously injured in the crash.
Collision with Dump Truck Claims Lives of Two Students
According to The Daily Herald, four female students from South Elgin High School were traveling in a Honda Civic which collided with a dump truck near the intersection of Route 25 and Kenyon Road around 7am.
The crash occurred less than a mile from the school. One student was pronounced dead at the scene. A second student passed away later from sustained injuries at the hospital.
As reported by The Chicago Tribune, the male dump truck driver and two surviving students suffered non-life threatening injuries. Images from the crash site show both vehicles wrecked off the road in a nearby cornfield.
School Community Mourns Tragic Loss
According to CBS News Chicago, crisis counselors and comfort dogs were brought into South Elgin High School to support grieving students and staff. The teens’ identities have not yet been released at the request of their families.
Principal Kurt Johansen said the school is focused on getting through this incredibly difficult tragedy one step at a time. The cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation by local authorities.
South Elgin High School and the greater community are in mourning after this devastating loss of young life. The students will be deeply missed by all those whose lives they touched.
