Mark Fischbach, better known by his online alias Markiplier, is one of the most popular and influential YouTube personalities, with over 35 million subscribers and 17 billion views on his channel. He is best known for his comedic commentary and reactions to various video games, especially horror games. However, he is also an aspiring filmmaker who has directed and starred in two interactive films on YouTube: A Heist with Markiplier (2019) and In Space with Markiplier (2022).

Now, he is taking his passion for horror and filmmaking to the next level with his feature directorial debut, Iron Lung, an adaptation of the 2022 indie horror game of the same name by David Szymanski. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic future where an event known as “The Quiet Rapture” caused all known stars and habitable planets in the universe to disappear, leaving behind a desolate moon with an ocean of blood. The player controls a convict who is sent to explore the blood ocean in a poorly-constructed midget submarine nicknamed the “Iron Lung”, using only a camera attached to the exterior of the vessel.
On April 21, 2023, Fischbach released a teaser trailer for Iron Lung on his YouTube channel1, which has already amassed over 7 million views and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from his fans and fellow creators. The trailer shows Fischbach as the protagonist of the film, wearing a spacesuit and entering the Iron Lung. He then proceeds to descend into the blood ocean, encountering various horrifying creatures and obstacles along the way. The trailer ends with a close-up of Fischbach’s face covered in blood, as he screams in terror.
According to Deadline Hollywood2, Fischbach is not only directing, writing, and acting in Iron Lung, but also self-financing and producing it with Will Hyde and Jeff Guerrero. The film also stars Caroline Rose Kaplan as Fischbach’s co-pilot and love interest, and features a cameo by Szymanski himself. The film’s soundtrack is composed by Andrew Hulshult, who also scored the original game. The film was shot in Austin, Texas, and is currently in post-production.
Fischbach has stated that Iron Lung will be the bloodiest horror film ever made, surpassing Evil Dead’s 50,000 gallons of blood. He even had to go to the hospital during filming due to getting too much blood in his eyes. He has also expressed his gratitude to Szymanski for allowing him to adapt his game into a film, and to his fans for supporting his creative endeavors.
Iron Lung is expected to be released in theaters sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. It will mark Fischbach’s first theatrical film, as well as one of the rare instances of a video game adaptation being directed by a fan of the original game. Fans of Markiplier and horror can look forward to seeing his vision come to life on the big screen soon.
